Fountains Abbey Stock Book
Comprises twelve annual stock accounts, eleven of which cover the period 1480-1490, and the twelfth, which is incomplete, appears to date between 1492 and 1495.
Each section contains the annual account of the 'magister averiorum', or feemaster (master of the beasts), and that of the 'magister ovium' (master of the sheep). Each section also contains shorter annual accounts for horses and pigs.

Transcript Conventions
The transcripts have been prepared as a line by line version of the original manuscript text
The translations have been written in modern English and not a verbatim word for word translation. Place names in the translations have been given in their modern version.
Ampersand has been transcribed as 'et'
£ s d have not been expanded, but ‘lib’ and ‘pet’ have been expanded in Latin and written out in English as 'stones’ and ‘pounds'.
The second of double 'i' as has been rendered as 'j' and 'j' has been used for the final in numerals.
There are some places where it was uncertain whether the reading should be 'Idem' or 'Ijdem' where there were two or more accountants (eg page 49). They have all been standardised for consistency as 'Idem', whether singular or plural.
In the transcripts the capitalisation of the original has been followed, except in proper names and roman numerals.
The transcriber’s decision to transcribe the remainders as 'remanens/entes' or 'remanet/ent' has been honoured.
'Tonsura' has been used for shearing, following classical Latin; 'tonsio', is often the medieval rendering.
No punctuation has been used in the transcripts. In the translations it has been kept to a minimum.
The place-names have been checked in Smith and in Michelmore’s edition of the Fountains Abbey Lease Book. They have been rendered in modern spelling as far as possible; Appilgarth remains as in the original.
Also note:
The use of the ‘long hundred’: ‘c’ in Roman numerals actually indicates 120; and the use of the ‘short pound’: 12 lbs is one stone (not 14).
A number of the extracts from the Stock Book relate to the granges at Brimham. Brimham divided into two principal holdings: Brimham Grange, and Brimham Lodge which was situated in the Park. Brimham Grange: keeper was Thomas Jenkynson (just pre-Stock Book time), Eleanor Jenkynson who accounted for the stock in 1481 was described in 1484 as widow of Thomas Jenkynson.
